ABOUT GATE 2023

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a national level exam that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Science/ Commerce/ Arts. GATE 2023 will be a computer-based test (CBT) which is being organized by the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The exam will be conducted by IISc Bangalore and seven IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee), on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India (GoI).

Qualified GATE score can be used for admission into the Masters Program and Recruitment by some Public Sector Companies/or financial assistance

Organizing Institute for GATE 2023 is Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

Distribution of Marks in papers XL

GA : 5 x 1 + 5 x 2 =15 : 5 questions carrying 1-mark each and 5 questions carrying 2-marks each
Subject: Chemistry (Compulsory): 9 x 1 + 8 x 2 =25 marks : 9 questions carrying 1-mark each and

8 questions carrying 2-marks each Only TWO optional sections can be answered at a time.
Each of the optional sections of the XL paper (Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology,

Food Technology) contains 19 questions carrying a total of 30 marks: 8 questions carrying

1-mark each (sub-total 8 marks) and 11 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 22 marks).

Marking Scheme

General Aptitude: 15 Marks + Chemistry: 25 Marks + Optional TWO Subjects: 60 Marks ,

Total: 100 Marks

Negative Marking

For a wrong answer chosen in a MCQ, there will be negative marking.
For 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
Likewise, For 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.
No negative marking for Incorrect answer(s) to MSQ or NAT question.

Note 1 : If a candidate is pursuing any higher degree or has already obtained a degree higher than that mentioned in the Table below the candidate will be allowed to appear for GATE 2023 examination.
Note 2 : The candidates with B.Sc./ B.A./ B.Com. degrees (3-year program) desirous to seek admission for masters programs in IITs may refer to JAM-2023 Examination.

For how many GATE papers can a candidate  apply?

A candidate is allowed to appear either in ONE or UP TO TWO papers of the GATE 2022 examination. However, a candidate is only allowed to select the second paper from the pre-defined Two Paper Combination list.
